Style Christchurch 2008 is the premier South Island fashion event and runs from the 3rd to the 7th of November 2008. The annual show is produced and directed by former Fiji resident, Andhy Blake. This year’s event includes Koila McBride, the international Fijian designer. The week begins with the New Face Show and the Retail Collections Show. It ends with the special Red Dress collection featuring red outfits in aid of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation, and the Finale which showcases the latest collection of 13 of New Zealand’s top designers.
Emerging Pacific and Maori artists from the Elam School of Fine Arts Tuakana mentoring programme are exhibiting their work at two Auckland venues. The first is at the Artstation and runs from the 29th of October to the 5th November 2008 (5 – 7 pm). The second is at the George Fraser Gallery and runs from the 8th of November to the 8th of November 2008 (5.30 – 7.30 pm). Students exhibiting include Mose Eteuati, Ane Tonga, Niutuiatua Joseph Lemalu, Shannon Teao, and Paula Schaffhausen.
Pacific art critic and academic, Karen Stevenson, launched The Frangipani is Dead: Contemporary Pacific Art in New Zealand at the Salamander Gallery in Christchurch on October 15th. This book discusses the work of contemporary Pacific artists in New Zealand and will be an important resource for readers with an interest in Pacific arts. The book is published by Huia Publishers (Wellington).
New Zealand Samoan soulstress and queen of Hip Hop Ladi6, has just completed her highly anticipated solo album “Time is not Much”. Returning from a successful international tour through Europe and the UK, Ladi6 is celebrating the release of her latest album with a New Zealand tour. Tickets are available from myspace.com/ladi6. Pacific stars shone at last month’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards with Savage picking up the International Achievement award alongside Flight of the Concords. Savage topped half a million in digital single sales in the US for his remixed hit “Swing”. Other Pacific winners were Scribe who took out the award for Best Urban / Hip Hop Album for Rhymebook. Samoan – Chinese Soul, Jazz and Hip-hop songstress Iva Lamkum was given the honour of performing live at Auckland’s Vector Arena for the annual red carpet event.
Emerging Tongan visual artist Kulimoenga “Stone” Maka, will open his first solo exhibition “Ngatu Tu Uli” (The Past is Now) on the 4th of November 2008 at the Christchurch Centre of Contemporary Art (COCA) Mair Gallery. The exhibition will run from the 5th to the 22nd of November.
Last month, Shigeyuki Kihara, a Samoan-Japanese performance artist from Auckland, opened her solo exhibition “Living Photographs” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Shigeyuki has also been performing “Taualuga: the Last Dance” at the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium. This is an outstanding achievement for Pacific Arts. The exhibition is running from the 7th of October 2008 to the 1st of February 2009.
