Survive & Thrive: Invitation for Auckland’s Creative Sector to Network

ART (Arts Regional Trust | Te Taumata Toi-a-Iwi) and The Big Idea | Te Aria Nui warmly invites interested individuals to attend a unique, forum, expo and networking event: “Survive & Thrive: sustaining creative projects, organisations and businesses in challenging economic times.” Participants will hear from leading creative entrepreneurs, their success stories, and their views on present and future opportunities. The forum presents an opportunity to connect with peers and other influential people from a variety of backgrounds and sectors. Organisations that are the supporters, motivators and the backbone of the Auckland region’s creative sector will be on hand to help artists, producers, makers and doers to deliver. Entry is free. However, places are limited, so registration is essential. After London and Vancouver, Morububuna’s Art Comes to Auckland

After drawing significant interest in London and Vancouver, Martin Morububuna’s work has come to Auckland at the Okaioceanikart Gallery. The Papua New Guinean is the current artist in Residence at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. He will be shortly returning to Victoria, Canada, where he will be at Alcheringa Gallery from November 5-13 2009 as part of the Hailans to Ailans exhibition. Morububuna was born in 1957 on Kiriwina, the largest of the Trobriand Islands, in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea. Today he is recognized as an important contemporary artist whose work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in many countries in the Pacific, Asia, and Europe. Much of his work depicts festivities and rituals associated with the celebrations of life and abundance.

Chloe Marsters Wins American Arts Residency

Chloe Marsters has won the Park Lane Wallace Trust Development Award, a residency at the prestigious American Vermont Studio Center for visual artists and writers from across the US and around the world. For the annual 2009 Wallace Trust Awards Chloe entered ‘Boohoo’ a 44 piece work in ink. The young Cook Islander is currently a second year student at AUT’s Visual Arts and Design School.

Artists for Tsunami Relief: Art Auction in Auckland

Artists have come together to organise an Art Auction in aid of victims of the recent tsunami in Samoa and Tonga. The auction on Tuesday 20th of October 2009 at Webb’s in Newmarket features more than 70 pieces of art from some of New Zealand’s most renowned artists. This artist-initiated project is being coordinated through the Tautai Contemporary Pacific Arts Trust. Works have been promised from Lonnie Hutchinson, Niki Hastings-McFall, John Ioane, Suzanne Tamaki, Fatu Feu’u, Edith Amituanai, Jim Vivieaere, Johnny Penisula, Michael Hight, Sopolemalama Filipe Tohi, Deborah Crowe, Chris Charteris, Tracey Tawhiao, Nathan Pohio, and many more. Also included is an eclectic mix of novel works which include signed memorabilia of Bro’Town, a T-shirt and CD package from King Kapisi, a DVD package of Sima Urale films, a photographic series by Steven Ball, as well as book packages from writers. The event also features live performances by dancers, musicians and poets. The auction is at Webb’s auction house, 18 Manukau Rd, Newmarket from 6 pm. Viewing times are from 9 am – 6 pm. Great Haul for Pacific Musicians at New Zealand Music Awards

Pacific musicians scooped 7 of the 22 awards at last night’s 44th Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. Among them Smashproof won the coveted “People’s Choice Award”, as well as the “Highest Selling New Zealand Single” and the “Best Video” for their chart-topping single Brother. The song is a social commentary about life in South Auckland’s neighbourhoods. Smashproof trio Deach, Tyree and Young Sid are of Samoan, Niuean, and Cook Islands/Maori descent. Their song broke a 23 year old record when it spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the New Zealand charts. Brooke Fraser shared the prestigious International Achievement with the night’s big winner Ladyhawk. Savage won “Best Male Solo Artist”, Ladi 6 won “Best Urban/Hip-Hop Album”, while Fat Freddy’s Drop won “Best Aotearoa Roots Album” and “Best Producer”.
