Six Pasifi-Kana artists from New Caledonia will exhibit their art at the Okaioceanikart Gallery in Auckland to celebrate the Siapo Association’s ten year anniversary. These diverse works provide a window into the richness of indigenous Kanak culture and its vibrant relationship with New Caledonia’s other cultural groups. The show has a mixture of established artists of international standing as well as fresh new voices. They include Yvette Bouquet (painter), Steve Thomo (carver), Patrice Kaikilekofe (painter, carver, musician, Marie-Chanel Tamole (writer), Ela To’omaga Kaikilekofe (body adornment, sculpture) and Paula Gony Boi (painter). All works are for sale. The exhibition opens on Wednesday 4th March and runs until Saturday 28 March 2009 at the Okaioceanikart Gallery, Langham Hotel Mall, 65 Karangahape Rd, Auckland. The opening night will feature a discussion on the place of Kanak art in contemporary Pacific art, with live music and poetry readings.
