Newbie Writers’ Workshop with Banana Boat Writers Group

Got an idea for a story? Want to write? Looking to write but don’t know where to start? Written something but you’re not sure how good it is? Screenwriter David Mamea helps you answer these questions yourself as you take part in this workshop. D F Mamea is screenwiter, filmmaker, Banana Boat Writers Group coordinator and blogger. The workshop is proudly brought to you by Banana Boat Writers and is supported by Auckland City Creative Communities, Pasifika 2010 and Playmarket. It takes place on Tuesday 9 March from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Council Chambers, Town Hall, Queen St Auckland. Identity Exhibition Features Emerging Talent at Mangere Arts Centre

The public is invited to view ‘Identity’, a new group exhibition curated by Vanessa Wynyard and featuring emerging artists from South Auckland. The exhibition features woodblock prints, digital art, painting, weaving, drawing and photography by Te Kori Fatuloa, Dana Rapata, Lome Tanuvasa, Aaron Unasa, Kerrie-Anne Van Heerden, Allen Vili and Vanessa Wynyard. Vanessa says, “everyone has a story to tell. A narrative about who we are, where we come from and what makes us singular in the world. I believe our surroundings define our physical, spiritual and emotional being, shaping us into the person we are today”.  The exhibition runs from 5 – 24 December, 2009 at the Mangere Arts Centre, 93 Bader Drive, Shop 17, Mangere Town Centre, Manukau City. Entry is free.

Master Craftsman Receives Prestigious Pacific Arts Award

Tongan master craftsman, Sopolemalama Filipe Tohi is the winner of the 2009 Creative New Zealand Senior Pacific Artist Award ($10,000). The Pacific Starmap champion was acknowledged for his outstanding contribution to the heritage of the traditional art of lalava and ‘mana’ within the community. His work is based on the ancient Pacific Island art form used for joining and binding materials such as houses, canoes and tools. Filipe Tohi joins other prominent artists as winner of the Senior Pacific Artist Award. They are: Johnny Penisula (2002), Albert Wendt (2003), Nathaniel Lees (2004), Opetia Foa’ai (Te Vaka) (2005), Jim Vivieaere (2006), Justine Simei-Barton (2007), and Igelese Ete (2008).
